"I'm not satisfied with the current situation, but I'm not overwhelmed." A little new change to my usual work. Illustrator Okataoka
An interview project "Good Anbe Adults" that focuses on people who enjoy their daily lives on work days and holidays and live a "good Anbe" lifestyle.
This time, we talked to Mr. Okataoka, a popular illustrator who is active in a wide range of fields such as providing illustrations for magazines such as "POPEYE" and "BRUTUS", logo marks for restaurants, and artwork for musicians.
Eanbe is in charge of the embroidery design for the "DRUNKEN vietnam Jacket" released in February 2021 and the artwork for the 21SS Hawaiian shirt "DRUNKEN".
This time, I handed Aloha directly to the person himself and took a little time at the same time as taking a picture, and talked about what "good anbe" is for Mr. Okataoka.
* Good Anbe is a word used when you feel good in a dialect such as Okinawa.
Try wearing Eanbe Aloha
-Thank you for everything from the last Betojan to the design of Aloha this season! Today, you actually picked up Eanbe's Aloha and wore it. What is your impression?
After all the quality of the print is amazing. I thought it would be great to see it in the photo, but when I look at it in real life, this crispness is completely different from that of an inkjet. After all it is amazing if a craftsman does it. Because you can see really small details. I sometimes deliver finely designed items to apparel and crush them with inkjets, but I'm glad that this has a high recall rate.
-I'm happy. This time, I couldn't do just the nostrils of the little squirrel here. I was told that only here is a little difficult.
I don't even notice this, at all (laughs)
-A sample was sent from Kyoto, and it was said that this part was the limit. Everything else is out.
That's amazing. The nostrils of the squirrel are very fine. I didn't really notice this either. Also, when I actually wear it, it feels very nice to the touch, so it's comfortable to wear. The size is good and the color is good.
-thank you! Aloha, when can you wear it?
After all I want to go to the sea. When you get in a car and go to the sea. Also, I want to wear it when I return to Miyazaki or Kagoshima in the summer . (* Mr. Okataoka was born in Miyazaki and raised in Kagoshima)
-Coordination is also insanely matched with this feeling now.
I can wear it as it is, so I thought it would be nice to have a rough look rather than trying to coordinate with the aloha because I wore this aloha separately.
* Uncle Aloha was jealous again because he looked so good after Betojan.
Make a little new change to your usual work
-Change the topic a little. Is there anything you are particular about or cherish in your work?
What you cherish. How is it? It's not too hard, or it's a natural body. There may be some misunderstandings when I say this, but I feel like I'm not trying too hard. Work is fun, but it's not just fun, so if you get too serious, you may get tired or tired.
When I say that, I feel like I don't know if anyone other than me can understand it, and maybe I'm trying something new or something like that. I feel like I'm conscious of the challenges that people don't understand or don't understand so that I can continue for a long time or not get bored of myself.
-For example, what kind of challenge are you taking?
It's a really delicate range, but I tried changing the touch a little, adding a little shadow, and adding a little texture to the solid part. That's about it, but I'm conscious of that.
-Did you have a chance to make a small change?
I think everyone is updating each as an illustrator. That may mean that you are not satisfied with the current situation. However, it feels like it happened naturally rather than as a trigger. When I first became an illustrator, I got a job, and that was all I needed, but I can't help doing the same thing all the time. So, when I get tired of my style, I think I should try something new.
About "good anbe" and memorable work at work-What kind of moment do you have when you are working and have a good time?
Of course, it is a premise that the client will be satisfied, but when I can do more than I expected. That's the moment when I tried something new and it worked, as I said earlier.
After that, the moment I see the finished product like this Aloha for the first time. In the case of magazines, when you deliver it, there is a saying "Oh, I could draw a good one", but it's the moment when you actually see it in a bookstore or see it as a thing. It may be a fun moment to do.
-Are there any particular impressions of the work you have done so far?
I like music in various genres, but I've always liked Chatmonchy since I was in high school. So, when I designed the tour goods for Chatmonchy, I was really glad I did it. Such moments are still memorable.
I don't care, but it's fun to drive while playing music-Please tell us about "good anbe" in your daily life!
It's pretty normal, but it's fun to drive in a car or something like that. I like cars, so I go out somewhere in the car, or run somewhere without any purpose. Also, are you looking forward to listening to music in the car? I don't care.
-Are you going on holidays or during breaks?
I agree. On my days off, I want to get in the car for the time being.
-When you went to the solo exhibition last time to ask about the size of Betojan, the theme was classic cars and vintage cars, but what made you addicted to cars?
The reason I got hooked was that all my father's family loved vehicles. It's the same with cars and motorcycles, but I think that's probably the effect. Also, when I was in junior high school, there was a software called "Gran Turismo" on the Sony PlayStation, and that game was one of the reasons. I was really into it.
* "Gran Turismo" is a racing game for PlayStation released in 1997.
-"Gran Turismo" is insanely surprising! Even when you went to South America, you were taking pictures of your car on Instagram.
You went to Mexico and Cuba. It wasn't the purpose of going to see the car, but after all there are many good cars, so I felt like I would take a lot of pictures.
* Okataoka's favorite car VOLVO 940-Are you particular about your own style while driving?
Is it music? I listen to anything, but it may be quite fun to select my own songs according to the time of day. At night, I listen to songs that are a little calm, and when I go out somewhere, it's a song that makes me excited. I think everyone is. That's why I make playlists myself.
Also, the deck is broken, but there is a portable cassette deck. I put it on the car, so I listen to the cassette tape. It's a mixtape made by a friend, or something that's usually sold.
-It's really fashionable. I think you are particular about fashion, but what kind of fashion do you usually like to wear?
Most of the used clothes. I haven't read fashion magazines at all, so I haven't read them for more than 5 years, so I'm not sure if I'm interested in fashion. But for the last 5 years or more, I've been wearing second-hand clothes all the time. But when it comes to second-hand clothing, I often choose LLBean, Eddie Bauer, something from the 90's a little while ago, or an old outdoor T-shirt.
New challenges in the future
-Are there any jobs you would like to challenge in the future?
There are various jobs I want to challenge, but it's a picture book. I like picture books. I've made two works so far, but of course I made the pictures myself, thinking of a story that I was satisfied with. I wish I could do more picture books in the future.
Mr. Okataoka talked about his attitude toward work and his daily life while introducing his cool and astringent car.
"I look better than I am again ..." When I saw him wearing it, Uncle Aloha of Eanbe was so jealous that he dressed perfectly this time as well.
I am looking forward to new challenges and wonderful illustrations in the future! Thank you, Mr. Okataoka!
